How do I get TCP/IP-based data into my existing Windows applications?

Once you have a RS232 serial device connected to your TCP/IP networks, either using a hardware based serial device server or using TCP-Com, how can you get that data where it is needed – in databases, spreadsheets, data collection applications, and more?

There are a few options:

•  You can save the TCP/IP data to a file on your Windows PC, using an application such as Telnet or HyperTerminal, and then import that file into the application where you need to process the data. This is slow, tedious and not “real-time”.

•  You can use TCP-Wedge from TALtech. TCP-Wedge takes data from any TCP/IP port address and inputs the data directly into any Windows applications including Excel, Access, FoxPro and more. TCP-Wedge is easily set-up with simple menus where you select the IP Address and TCP/IP Port number to take the data from, define how you would like TCP-Wedge to parse you data into fields, filter the data to keep just the pieces you need and transfer the resulting data exactly into the correct fields in any other Windows application. TCP-Wedge is very similar to WinWedge Pro from TALtech except that instead of inputting data from a RS232 port, it inputs data from a TCP/IP port.

•  The latest version of TCP-Com, v2.0, can now create virtual RS232 ports and send data from TCP/IP network ports to the virtual RS232 ports. This allows existing Windows applications that communicate with an RS232 port to now communicate over TCP/IP network ports. Collect data from instruments connected to an Ethernet network or the Internet directly into HyperTerminal, WinWedge and other Windows based serial communications program.
